The La Corriveau story is such an example of a punishment more hideous than the crime that her story refuses to be forgotten. More than two centuries later it has been the subject of a play and more than one film.

Introducing La Corriveau

La Corriveau, properly Marie-Josephte Corriveau, was born sometime between 1729 and 1733 at St. Vallier, Quebec. She was said to be a village beauty. Her first marriage, to Charles Bouchard, took place in 1749 at St. Vallier. He was one of 10 children of Nicolas and Anne (Sylvain) Bouchard. He and Marie had three children before his sudden death 11 years after they were wed.

There was the usual mourning period, but after it ended a strange rumor took root: Marie had murdered Charles by pouring lead into his ear.
