Wild animals abound in the Great Smoky Mountains including 66 species of mammals, 200 bird species, 50 types of fish, and over 80 varieties of reptiles. Park rangers and conservationists have taken great pains to preserve and restore the natural habitats of these animals, so much of the mountains remain an untamed, undeveloped forest paradise for nature lovers. These animals make their home in the Smoky Mountains, and they are comfortable there. Many of the animals are most active and visible at dusk and dawn.

When camping, hiking, or exploring the park, visitors should remember that they are guests. Observe wildlife from a distance of at least 50 yards, so the animal is not disturbed. Feeding, teasing, or in any way disturbing the wildlife in the Smoky Mountains is against the law for both the visitors safety and for the well being of the animals.

Smoky Mountain Black Bear

Possibly the most popular Smoky Mountain resident, the black bear adult can reach over 400 pounds and can stand over six feet tall. Between 500 to 600 bears reside in the park. Cubs are born during the winter months, and mothers venture out of the den with the cubs in March or April. Mother bears are never far from their cubs and are aggressively protective, so visitors should place as much distance as possible between themselves and any cubs they encounter.
