Serialized stories and novels have existed for centuries in one form or another. It can be argued that the legendary One Thousand and One Nights (or Arabian Nights) was one of the first examples. After all, its connecting plot is Sheherazade's nightly storytelling.

In the 19th century, many writers survived on serialized fiction. Charles Dickens is one of the greatest examples, as many of his novels were published on a chapter-by-chapter basis in magazines. The famous Sherlock Holmes was written into stories for publication in a popular magazine at the time by his creator, Arthur Conan Doyle. H. G. Wells published serially, as did Jack London and Leo Tolstoy.

The Emergence of Web Novels

The advent of the internet has allowed greater ease for authors to publish serial novels. Stephen King experimented with this format in 2000 with The Plant, which was an unfortunate failure and never completed. (Of note, his 1996 novel The Green Mile was published in six volumes.)
